There’s Just Us
Indira Gandhi famously said, “Winning or losing of the election is less important than strengthening the country.” So it is that another election season passes into history. Some greet the results with joy -- others with sadness. That is true following every election. Elation or dejection merely signal the depth of our commitment to what we believe.
At BPNN, we are committed to strengthening our country by helping our neighbors. The recent election didn’t – and couldn’t - change our commitment to our community no matter who won. It did nothing to alter our purpose, which is to improve our corner of the world. Poll numbers for or against our chosen candidate don’t temper our empathy or compassion. We will be as we have always been, helping our neighbors and our world.
As we move past an election season that pitted candidate against candidate and voting blocs against each other, we must remember that those at BPNN who might support a different political agenda are not our enemies. They are our neighbors, working shoulder to shoulder with everyone else to make Dane County a better place. Our friends who serve the community with us might not agree with us on everything. But we agree on the need to help our neighbors.
BPNN is committed to being a place that welcomes everyone of good will. That’s why we don’t permit people to campaign at BPNN, even to the point of discouraging attire that espouses political or religious beliefs. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, people of faith, agnostics, atheists, men, women, gay, straight, trans, young, old, black, white, brown, red – none of that matters at BPNN. We will ultimately be judged, and we should judge ourselves, by one test: Did I act in kindness to help others? And that’s quite enough for this, or any, post-election time.
If your candidates won, congratulations. If your candidates lost, condolences. Of course, it matters. But the work we do, and the values we share, are too vital for any election to disrupt. Let’s get back to strengthening the country, starting with our own community. There is joy in that work, independent of who wins or loses any election.
Thank you for all you do.
