For Goodness Sake

Sadness, suffering, and cynicism surround us as we look about. But if we look closer, we’ll see people doing good, citizens striving for justice, and organizations like BPNN helping society. I invite you to “take a good look” at the world around you this holiday season. That is, look for goodness.

We see what we choose to see. Grey skies can threaten our plans, or they can promise needed rain. People who challenge us are obstacles or they are teachers training us to overcome adversity. It’s up to us. Often, we can’t control what happens to us. We can always control how we respond to what happens.

Heading into another holiday season, we’ll have choices. Family gatherings might not fulfill expectations. The season might bring disappointments. Resolve to find the good. The adult child who won’t be with you this year might open space to invite a dear friend to a holiday celebration. The meal that didn’t come out quite right can spur funny stories for family lore. Something positive lives in each negative if we’ll only see it. And when we do, we brighten our world and the world of those around us.

I wish for all of you a perfect holiday season. Where it is not perfect, I hope you will strive to cherish what is good about each day (imperfect though it may be), during the holidays and beyond. Thank you for all you do to make BPNN and our community very special. You don’t have to be perfect. Just be good and see the good – for goodness sake.

Happy Thanksgiving!
